  • One of the most attractive French carp lakes in Normandy, La Fonte is over 280 years old, dating back to the 17th Century. Stocked with carp in 1994, it has become a well established carp lake providing holidays for many happy anglers. The lake is located in the Perche region, an easy 1hr 40 drive from Caen, and less than 4 hours from Calais. Set in a very rural area this tree lined lake is simply a beautiful place to be and if its runs action with hard fighting carp you are after, then this lake is definitely a candidate for your list.

La Fonte is hired out exclusively and is ideal for 4 anglers (5/6 at a push) sharing the 3 double swims that span one side of the lake. Two of the swims are good doubles and the third swim is slightly smaller, but can accommodate two anglers if required.

The facilities are excellent with a very well equipped kitchen cabin, bait shed with freezer, along with a toilet and shower lakeside. The lake also offers great food package options.

In addition La Fonte also has some great optional accommodation options; a small pretty gite is available to rent just 60m away, sleeping up to 4 people. There is also a large house overlooking the lake which can sleep up to 16 people, an ideal solution for a large group looking to take families along too. You can find more information on both of these options under the ‘facilities’ tab. Please note that there is a seperate charge for these accommodation options, not included in the prices quoted on the website.

La Fonte is very picturesque with tree lined banks. The dawn chorus is particularly spectacular and sets off the tone for the whole day. The lake has a stream inlet and outlet, and s abundant with wildlife. You will find the deeper water towards the dam wall at one end, the top of the lake is shallower with a back eddy amonst the trees providing some great stalking opportunities.

The lake’s slim shape means it is possible to cast or use bait boats to fish the far margins, whilst your group stays socially fishing from the same bank. The lake bottom is mainly silt with some hard spots which are not too hard to find.

During field testing it was found that the more productive area was the far margin. However be advised that if you do fish to this area, please do not fish too tight to the marginal cover as it will result in lost fish and potentially put the carp’s safety at risk.

Fishing a couple of yards from the cover produced lots of bites and it is also advised that you walk around to the other bank prior to casting out to familiarise yourself with the area and ensure that it is safe for the fish. Tight lines and drop off lead systems are imperative to ensure that a bite results in a fish on the bank.

Vehicle access goes only as far as the facilities, there is a well maintained pathway around the lake giving access to the three double swims and a large wheelbarrow on site. The swims are evenly spread along one bank and each have a good wooden platform for playing and landing the carp (you’ll need to remember to bring pod or stage stands for these). Weighing stands are by each swim, so no struggling there either.
